This is the Blog for UW Biol444: Natural History of birds, Spring 2012. The main goal of this course is to achieve an integrated understanding of the biology of birds (evolution, physiology, anatomy, taxonomy, behavior, ecology and conservation). The lab component of this course provides hands-on experience in anatomy, taxonomy, and field skills.

Marsh Island Trail
Hey everyone,
I've been seeing a lot of really cool birds + behavior out on Marsh Island Trail (doing a survey here for my project).
I was super excited to run into a male and female Wood Duck last week. Here are some photos of these beautiful birds.

I was super excited to run into a male and female Wood Duck last week. Here are some photos of these beautiful birds.
The male was really protective of his mate. If she wandered more than 5-10 feet, he would call for her. If she didn't come back immediately, he would nip at her when she returned. They are a smaller duck. Here is a comparison with Mallard.
Today I ran into a mother mallard and her 8 cute ducklings!
